Progressive Resistance Training is the practice of using resistance that increases in difficulty as the exercise is performed.

There are two basic concepts to achieve progressive weight resistance.

The first would be using rubber tubes or bands; these are easy to acquire and quite safe to use.  They were developed as rehab tools; however they have been proven to be an indispensable alternative to static weight workouts.

By using both progressive and static resistance the muscles are challenged by the use of muscle confusion (the principle of keeping your muscles guessing).

The other example would be by adding chains to a barbell; as you lift the barbell you will be lifting more and more chain thus increasing the weight of the barbell as you lift it.

What Kind of Chain?
Most schools and lifters use size 5/8" carbon chain: lengths will be dependent on the exercise performed.  Expect to need two 5' - 6' lengths and two large carabiners (your specific use for the chain will determine the length needed).  Expect to pay about $5.00 per foot of chain.

You can contact Marcal rigging for this chain, they have sold to many schools in the St. Louis area.
